Changing Lives

Mr. Charles Berger

He is helping people through tough decisions.

BY BEN MORENO

Mr. Charles Berger has come to Frank McCourt High School ready to change lives of the students. At the moment he teaches Phys Ed classes and Health with different grades, and coaches teams in and outside of school. Not including his time in Frank McCourt, he has been teaching now for 5 years.

Before coming to this school he taught at a school for people with special needs called Hawthorne Country Day School in Manhattan, but when he heard of an opening here from his good friend Mr. Mantagas (a former teacher at Frank McCourt who no longer teaches us), he decided to take the job.

Mr. Berger is very passionate about what he does and while he works he thinks about the students’ needs and how he can achieve them. With the tremendous amount of support he feels he receives from everyone in the school — students, staff, and administration alike — he says he always tries to put enthusiasm into his work. When he is with the students he treats them as if they were adults with respect and values their inputs.

But what he truly believes is the most important thing that he does as a teacher is to change lives of people for the better. He is able to do this by helping people through tough decisions that will lead them on the path they want to go or to improve the one they are already on, and also by equipping them with the knowledge they will need to be healthy, fit, and protected.

Mr. Berger says he truly loves teaching. He loves the people and the activities involved with it, and he feels that the people connected to his teaching always have each other’s backs.
